“This is like a pilgrimage. I haven’t seen this many in our crowd come down all at once for a party since the inauguration.” said Spy Club owner, Paul Carvelas, who was recalling the moment when almost 900 junior jet set friends attended the official opening fete in Washington, D.C. club.
For this event, however, a sizeable portion of New Yorkers went down South in their Saabs and Jaguars.
“This is a pretty good club – for Washington,” said New Yorker Devin Mahony, who had come with three of his friends. “Usually when I used to come here, it was always a frustrating experience. There wasn’t any place to hang out here late at night. For fun, you just had to turn up the stereo.”
Spy Club partners wanted to make sure they were catering to their visitors’ comfort, which is why they deliberately stopped taking reservations once the number of RSVPs crossed 900.
“We just didn’t want to create a scene where you stand in line and get picked,” said Gary Pryor, one of the club’s partners. “At the Spy Club, you get invited.”
